Sammy Shrubber The forgotten champion
"Some fighters are brawlers, some fighters are thinkers. Sammy Shrubber was a thinking man’s fighter; but most thinking men would agree he was dull."
Olympic gold medal-winner, perpetual number one contender, and dedicated family man, Samuel H. Shrubber was the heavyweight champion that no one wanted.
In My Life Among the Heavyweights Book One, noted sports columnist David Spain describes the rise of Sammy Shrubber and the death of boxing.
Long Live the Champion My Life Among the Heavyweights The Memoirs of David Spain Book 1 edition by Steven L Kent Literature Fiction eBooks
I purchased this book largely in part because I'm great fan of Steven Kent's. I knew going in that it wasn't going to be a shoot em up military scifi adventure, and generally it's not the sort of subject I'd actively search for. That said, I'm a sports fan and a history buff. While boxing was well into its decline when I was born in the early 80s, there is still a lot of Americana associated with the larger than life personalities and matches that boxing gave us.The book is written as a memoir of a New York Times beat reporter, David Spain. After sort of falling into covering sports as a way to writing the economics page, he discovers that covering boxing is where it's at for him, and dedicates his life to it. Spain is a likeable man, but he's also a little sad. At the end of his career, he's realizing he's given everything to his job, and sacrificed home and family to do so. But the love Spain has for the sport and the people associated with it comes through strongly.
This first volume revolves mainly around a heavyweight fighter, who aspires to become the heavyweight champ, and whether his lack of schtick is good for the sport. Told through Spain's words, it's not so much a narrative as it feels like sitting down with a man, buying him a beer or two and asking him to tell you, "so what was the real story with...."
Kent weaves the story in a way that makes the narrative go swiftly, and at the same time manages to slip in these little asides and anecdotes that add humor and a sense of authenticity. Like that older guy you know who's led a fascinating life, and every time you see him, you ask for a story for two very important reasons: 1. He's got great stories to tell, they're unique. and 2, and the more important reason, he can really TELL it. It's not just a rundown of events. It's punctuating the heartbreak, and letting the dry humor draw you in.
If you're a sports' fan, boxing fan, or a fan of good stories of times gone by that will likely never be duplicated, this is one for you.

Long Live the Champion My Life Among the Heavyweights The Memoirs of David Spain Book 1 edition by Steven L Kent Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I had this book recommended to me by a friend, and it didn't really sound like something I would normally read or enjoy. I found that I actually liked it a lot. It was such an easy read. I would classify it as historical fiction - a fictional character interacting with other fictional characters, but in the context of real events and people. I enjoyed learning about the inside world of boxing, and I would think that boxing fans would enjoy this just as much if not more.
I'm not a boxing fan but I confess to being a Steve Kent fan, this was a darn great start and i can't wait for more. Evoking the atmosphere of old time journalism and engaging back stories on the characters it melds into a page turner.
Highly recommended.
If anything this was definitely a fun read. The stories keep you reading and interested. I will definitely continue to read Kent's releases.
Steven Kent has explored the world of boxing and how it has become another facet of the entertainment industry, focusing upon drawing crowds more than the sport itself. Sammy Shrubber, the primary character, has two sets of opponents one, his challengers in the ring, and two, his managers and the boxing establishment, who want a showman/entertainer who can box far more than they want a winning boxer. The boxing-entertainment establishment is the bigger and tougher opponent. It is a worthwhile read.
